San Ti: The Motion of the Mind and Mental Body

Most of us find it a challenge to be centered, present, clear and relaxed in our lives. Our energy is often too sluggish or too agitated. Our mind is often spaced out or distracted by incessant and sometimes negative thinking. We make great efforts to be clear and calm, but these periods often don’t last long. The speed of modern life and proliferation of computers and smartphones has made this situation even more challenging. This retreat with Master Bruce Frantzis seeks to provide us with exceptional tools to remedy this.

Course Details

San Ti is the Standing Qigong practice from the Taoist Internal Martial Art of Hsing I Chuan. In Master Frantzis' opinion, it is the single most effective qigong practice to develop strength, energy, focus and clarity. It strongly develops the principal energy centre of the human body, the lower dandien (hara), simultaneously with the body’s central energy channel and our presence and awareness.

This naturally has great health benefits, also specifically strengthening the Metal element (at its peak in autumn). This affects the lungs, spine, central nervous system and brain, all of which are central to our clarity. Moreover, it enables practitioners to become superbly centered and focused in a progressively more relaxed way, without falling into distraction. For martial artists and competitive athletes, the benefits are evident as they become stronger, more clear and yet more relaxed continuously in the moment.

For meditators, Master Frantzis will show us how to take these capacities into seated and moving meditation practices. This can enable us to pay much greater attention to the motion and quality of our mind. In this way, we become much better able to clear the mind of the subtle yet powerful energies which cause distraction and which prevent us from successfully releasing negative energies and thought from our hearts and minds.

In this retreat, we will focus especially on the entire thinking process of the mind (the mental body). We will learn how to relax the flow of thoughts and release mental tension into a more centered, relaxed and open mental state. In this more open state of mind we are not so easily afflicted by erratic and often negative thinking. Rather, we can make more spontaneous and creative use of the positive qualities of thought. This course will move between doing the San Ti Standing Qigong posture on both the right and left sides of the body, seated meditation, and moving meditation practices such as Gods Playing the Clouds. We will build on interactive practices begun several years ago in Oxford to experience how we can bring the meditative qualities above into the social interaction of our lives.

Master Frantzis will be available to offer advice and examples to martial artists as to how bring the capacities derived from these practices into their art. You are also encouraged to bring your laptops and/or smartphones! Master Frantzis will suggest avenues to help get us past the factors which enable digital devices to be so addictive and damaging of our energy, attention and thinking process.

Event Structure

Registration/Check-in: Satuday, October 7, 9:00 AM--First class session begins at 10:00AM.

Daily schedule Sat-Wed, October 7-11: 10:00 AM-5:00 PM (with two hour lunch break). Course schedule subject to change during the event due to circumstances within the group dynamic. 

Prerequisites:  Everyone is welcome there is no specific requirement for attending the seminar. However, previous practice in developing your energy will enable you to learn more.
